Ø Viswanathan Anand , a"5 time World Chess Champion" is honoured with 2016 Hridaynath Mageshkar Award presented by Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao. He was selected for this award for his contribution to the game of chess and is conferred with this award on the occasion of 25th anniversary of the Hridayesh Arts .
Ø Dogri Poetess and Novelist Padma Sachdev (76) has been chosen for prestigious "Saraswati Samman for the year 2015" for her autobiography 'Chitt-Chete'written in Dogri language which was published in 2007.
§ Padma Sachdev received Padma Shri (2001), and Kabir samman poetry (2007-08).
Ø JJ Singh , an Ex-army Chief has been conferred with French highest Civilian honor, "Officer of the Legion of Honor".
Economy
Ø India became "World's largest remittance recipient" for year 2015 according to the report Migration and Development Brief , an annual report by World Bank. India attracted 69 billion US Dollars in remittances followed by China (64 Billion dollars).
Ø India stood at 44th position in the Global Connectivity Index among 50 countries in 2016 . This Global connectivity Index (CGI) report is compiled and published by Huawei( China telecom giant) . This index evaluated countries based on there ICT infrastructure including broadband, date centers, cloud services, big data etc in the scale from 0 to 100. India scored 30 while highest scored by United States(74).
Ø Republic of Nauru, a tiny south pacific island in pacific ocean became the 189th member of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.
Ø India and Maldives have signed 6 agreements in different sectors to boost bilateral relations between both these maritime neighboring countries. These were inked after comprehensive talks between Maldives president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Prime minster Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
o These sector include fields of avoidance of double taxation, conservation and restoration of ancient mosque, tourism and defense.
Schemes / Initiations
Ø Modi launches 'Gram Uday Se Bharat Uday Abhiyan' a village self governance campaign to strengthen Panchayati Raj villages and ensure social harmony in villages. It is 11 days campaign from April 14 to April 24 to promote this campaign.
Ø Delhi government launched second phase of "Odd-Even" scheme to check pollution in the national capital This second phase will be from April 15 to April 30 (15 days). It aims at curbing(curbing = keep in control) vehicular pollution and reducing traffic congestion on the roads of NCR Delhi.
Under this "Odd-Even" scheme, 4 wheeler with license
plates ending in odd number will run on odd dates and those ending with even
number can run on even dates.
Ø Jharkhand Government launches "Bhimrao Ambedkar Awas Yojana" for 'windows' on occasion of 125th anniversary of Dr.B R Ambedkar . This scheme was launched by Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das aims at building 11000 house units for widows in 2016-17 and also to disburse widow pensions.

Ø "Susmita Pande" is appointed as Chairperson of National Monument Authority(NMA). NMA functions under aegis of Union Ministry of Culture and Tourism which makes recommendations to government for grading and classifying centrally protected monuments which are of national importance . t is responsible for preservation and protection of monuments and sites
Ø Mastercard CEO, Ajay Banga, an Indian-American is appointed as member of US cyber security body ( Commission on Enhancing National Cyber security). This 10 membered commission strengthens cyber security in both public and private sectors .
o Ajay Bangra is an alumnus of IIM, Ahmedabad who started carrer in Nestle India and was appointed as President and CEO of Master card.
Ø Sushila Karki(63) has been selected as 1st Female Chief Justice of Nepal's Supreme Court . With this she becomes 26th Chief Justice of suprme court and succeeds Kalyan Shrestha who retired from this post.
Ø Union Government appointed Meeran Borwankar ,a senior lady IPS officer as Director General (DG) in Bureau of Police Research & Development. She is an IPS officer of 1981 batch of Maharashtra cadre.
International
Ø India and South Korea signed a MoU (Memorandum of understanding) for cooperation and mutual assistance in developments of ports and port related industry. It was signed by Nitin gadkari (Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister) and Kim Young Suk (South Korea Oceans and Fisheries Minister).
Ø Union cabinet gave approval for signing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and United Arab Emirates (UAE) on cooperation in "preventing and combating of Human Trafficking" . This MoU aims at increasing bilateral cooperation on the issues of prevention, recovery, rescue and repatriation related to human trafficking especially of women and children expeditiously.
Ø The G-7 Countries foreign ministers have issued Hiroshima Declaration which calls for a 'world without nuclear weapons' at a meeting held in Hiroshima(Japan). The G-7 countries include Canada,France, Germany, Italy,Japan, UK and US.
Ø Ukraininan Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk has resigned due to the political crisis in the country. Parliament speaker Volodymyr Grosyman has assumed the vacant Prime Minister post.
Science and Technology
Ø National Agriculture Market portal"eNAM" to connect e-mandis in several states is an online inter - connectivity of of e-mandis aimed at ushering in agriculture marketing reforms to enable farmers to get best price of their products. This portal was launched by Prime Minister Narenda Modi.
Ø National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched "Unified Payments Interface(UPI)" which will revolutionize mobile payment system in India. This was launched by RBI governor Raghuram Rajan.
o Total 29 banks have agreed to join this platform. which is a mobile based payment method that powers multiple bank accounts into singe mobile application.
Ø Global Tiger population increased by 22% for the 1st time in 100 years according to World Wildlife Fund and Global Tiger Forum reports.
Number of tigers has increased up to 3890(2016) from 3200(2010). India is having highest number of tigers with 2226 in number , followed by Russia with 433 tigers.
Ø 12th April has been celebrated as "International Day of Human Space Flight" to commemorate the date of first human space flight in the history of mankind. This is the 55th anniversary of First Human space flight . on this day in 1961 , Yuri Gagarin a USSR cosmonaut undertook 1st successful human space flight.
Ø Khadija Ismayilova, an investigative journalist is selected for prestigious "UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2016". She will be bestowed this award during celebration of World Press Freedom Day on May 3 2016 for her outstanding contribution to press freedom in difficult circumstances.
Ø Khargpur IIT has won National Intellectual Property (IP) award in the academic institutes category. IIT Kharagpur '100 patent drive' initiative has played key role in winning this award.

Ø "Param Kanchenjunga" a super computer is revealed at National Institute of Technology(NIT), Sikkim . This supercomputer is said to be most powerful and fastest super computer among all the 31 NIT's .
o It has been named after "Kangchengunga Mountain" which is the 3rd highest mountain in the world (8586 meters) located partly in Sikkim and partly in Nepal.

Ø Co- Founder of Hero Cycles, Satyanand Munjal(99) passed away in Punjab . He along with three brothers founded this hero group and served as Co-Chairman and Managing Director of Hero Cycles Ltd.

Ø "Gurgaon" will be here after called as 'Gurugram' as Haryana state Chief Minister, Manohar Lal approved this proposals to change names of Gurgaon and Mewat.

Ø James Taylor, England Batsman has announced retirement from International Cricket at very early age of 26 due to ill health (Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy) which needs an operation to his heart.

Ø Danny Willett of England won prestigious 2016 US Masters Golf tournament with a score of 283 . With this win Willett became 1st European golfer to win Masters since in 1999.
Ø Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia) has won 2016 Malaysian Open Badminton Title in men's single by defeating Chen Long in the final math at Kuala Lumpur .This is his 11th Malasyia Open title .

Ø 'Mary Kom' is named as the International Boxing Association (AIBA) ambassador for Women's World Championship which is scheduled from May 19 to May 27 this year to be held in Astana,Kazakhistan.
